Meeting Planner - Integrated in the World Clock

The Meeting Planner is a separate program module in Sharp World Clock. You open it by selecting the menu item "Converter" on a clock. It shows all cities of your current clocks and their local time in a graphical table.

Meeting Planner

For each city you can see the selected day and the adjacent days. Move the mouse over the window: the needle marks the time in question. You can see the local time in each of the cities now. When there is daylight saving in a city, the date shows an asterisk (*) as an indicator. When daylight saving starts, a day has only 23 hours usually - when it ends, it has 25 hours. The program shows these special cases correctly.

Arrange Meetings across different Time Zones

If you would like to see the time on a future date (for instance to schedule a phone conference), you can select the date in the date picker on top of the dialog or use the "next" and "previous" buttons in the lower right corner. If your list of cities is higher than the dialog, you can resize the dialog and if still not all cities fit in, you can left-click to "freeze" (lock) the needle temporarily.

Time Zone Converter - Part of World Clock

On the second tab of the "Converter" dialog is the Time Converter (Time Zone Converter). It helps you to convert the time from one time zone to another. Select the first city and date / time and then select the city for which you want to see that local time converted to.

Time Zone Converter

The conversion takes daylight saving transitions (DST) into account correctly, even on the day of a transition.

For each city you can see the country flag, the name of the current time zone (will change during daylight saving time), the daylight saving status, the UTC offset and the local time (your system time) offset. The date and time of the last and the next daylight saving transition is also shown.

Additionally you can see the distance between the two cities in kilometers and miles (air distance) below the time difference.

Click the "Switch" button to switch the two cities. The selected cities will get saved to disk and restored.

In the bottom part of the Converter tab is a section labeled Time Shift. Inside it you find a large slider control, which allows you to shift the displayed time on all your visible clocks on up to 12 hours in both directions (past and future).

Time Shift Control

During the shifting, the second hand on analog clocks is hidden and the time is rounded to the nearest 5 minutes. Click the Reset button or close the dialog to let the clocks show the current local time again.

Time Zone List

The third tab in the Converter dialog displays a list of all time zones that Sharp World Clock uses. Each city has a time zone according to IANA standard assigned to. There are currently more than 350 defined IANA time zones, but only about a third of that number Windows time zones. This list is sorted by UTC offset by default, but you can sort it differently if you like, by clicking the table headers.

Time Zones List

  • TZ IANA - the name of the time zone according to the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (sometimes called Olson database, according to its founding contributor)
  • TZ Windows - the windows time zone to which the IANA time zone is mapped. Windows contains its own list of time zones in the registry, which is currently smaller than the one from IANA
  • UTC Offset - the time difference to Coordinated Universal Time
  • DST - the daylight saving status of the time zone: Yes / No / Empty. If empty, the time zone does not have any daylight saving rules currently.
  • DST TZ Name - the name of the time zone during daylight saving
  • Last Trans - the date and time of the last transition - the time and date when it entered or when it left daylight saving time
  • Next Trans - the date and time of the next (upcoming) transition

City List

The last tab in the Converter dialog displays a list of all countries in the cities database Sharp World Clock uses. This list contains over 240 countries currently. It is sorted alphabetically by country name, but you can sort it differently if you like by clicking the table headers.

Countries List

  • Flag - the country flag
  • Country - the name of the country
  • ISO - the country code according to the ISO 3166 (Alpha-2) definition
  • Cities - the number of cities in that country, which are part of the cities database (capital city and larger cities, > 15,000 inhabitants)
  • UTC Offset - the time difference to Coordinated Universal Time
  • Daylight Saving - the daylight saving status of the time zone: Yes / No / Empty. If empty, the time zone does not have any daylight saving rules currently.
